Beware it is a really long post, it's a sum up of 3months internship, enjoy reading =D
Internship?! Fun?! yesh? no? Hmm let me share with you my TOUGH & FUN times :)
Having to go through all the procedures for applying jobs indeed is a TOUGH ones! To tailor-make each of the cover letter and resume which also means to re-edit and retype them to suit the companies you are applying isn't a good feeling, you might even give up. When you knew the chances to get jobs is really slim (for international students), I nearly gave up and planned for other alternatives! But what I really want to say is networking is really important, I said it once again NETWORKING is really essential in getting a job, of course doing it in a proper way :)
UHY, Garden South Tower |
I was lucky enough to get a job as Audit Trainee in UHY, its a medium size growing firm. oh yea, its located at the Gardens HAHA! shopping+working :). Honestly, the jobs scope is huge, but I could understand cos its a growing firm, and this is where you learn so many skills! I also finally understand why many seniors/lecturers mentioned that "if you prefer to learn lots of skills and experiences, go to small/medium firms". this is so obvious because they lack of staffs and you need to be responsible and do every-single-things by yourself, thats the facts and you can't run from it. Nevertheless, if you care so much of branding, allowance and job scope, you may choose big four, not saying that its bad to go there, you just learn a lil bit lesser compared to those who intern in smaller firm I guess (based on small firm experiences only not both so dont judge too far). It's GOOD, if you are there seriously, your CV gonna be so awesome the next time you apply for real job, many companies may have the perception that "WOW, you were intern in big four, sure thing that you are more outstanding than others! If i got the options to choose between big four and medium firms, I wud choose big four of course, such a bitch right, yes I know I am haha! but I would not get to know the awesome, caring and wonderful colleagues I had so far lol! here are my understanding so far,
First, the companies that big four auditing is really huge, so they need lots of man-power to audit and so all the tasks are divided (hopefully it's equal), not so important thing would be given to the trainees (someone worked in big four once told me that the seniors worried that they had to perform double work in case of the mistakes done by the trainee so yeah stuff like that) but somehow you can make your way showing them you are willing and interested to help further so you can help them to audit more advanced items :) Second, the company you engaged to may take several month, so within a three month internship if you are lucky enough, you will be assigned to 4-5 firms so exposures is less. The pros is that you got time to learn the nature and procedures of the firm you are auditing instead of rushing your work like what small firms do.. In medium firms, the period given to audit listed firms is one week and non-listed firms is 2-3 days, so you need to do everything fast and sacrifice all your time but I did not stay at client's office up to the morning, latest was 8pm :) Third, allowance in big firms of cos is higher, during internship, try to avoid thinking of these issues. One thing came into my mind was UNFAIR, but i got over it, try to think positive, the main purpose of internship is the experiences, the skills and the knowledge. But when you are having permanent jobs, please throw away this thinking and work for higher allowance, make sure its the kind of job you would love to do :)
There were few events held during the 3months internship, there were monthly birthday celebrations, CNY cocktail, BBQ, Yee sang (鱼生, a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor during CNY, but I wasn't there, oops!) and last farewell dinner :( oh yeah after farewell dinner, we went all the way to sunway for Karaoke and reached home at 3.30am.
Even though internship has ended, we still keep in touch, ie last two weeks we met up for dinner and movie, also to celebrate Corina advanced birthday :) will save bout this post for next one :)
Guess what! internship ain't that torturing if you have awesome and
caring colleagues around especially almost the same age as you :) not
discriminating others but they got family to take care so obviously they
can't spend so much time with us when Monday to Friday they were busy
working and so weekend meant for family :) So one of the Saturday, the
girls decided to go to Pavilion for Karaoke and a bit of chit chat! We
had our karaoke at CEO, Fahrenheit 88, just a walking distance =) The
first two pics belong to CEO website and I did a lil bit of touch-up,
After CEO, no one knows what to do, so we walked every where in the end headed to Godiva, the chocolates were so good but we were too full after the buffet in CEO.. so we didn't finish it :( Once we seated, we chatted for more that 3 hours till all shops closed zzz!
So concentrated in taking pic of a tea pot :P |
Btw, comments are most welcome, many people would not agree on what I blogged so yeah please go ahead comment politely :) Alright guys, enjoy your weekend, i hope i didn't bore you with such a long long longest post! :)
